MikroTik

RouterOS — prosumer-to-enterprise routing, switching, wireless.

Y5 distribution since 2021

(01)

Overview

What this brand is._

MikroTik is the engineer's networking brand — RouterOS exposes everything from BGP routing to deep firewalling on hardware that costs a fraction of comparable Cisco gear. Y5 stocks MikroTik for ISP-style deployments, complex routing requirements, point-to-point wireless backhaul, and any project where the customer has a knowledgeable network engineer who wants the flexibility of RouterOS.

Unmatched routing flexibility per rupee. When the project needs BGP, MPLS, complex QoS, or hot-failover at branch-router prices, MikroTik is the rare brand that ships those features for under ₹30,000.

Y5 position

Why we stock them._

Y5 specifies MikroTik when the customer has a competent network engineer on staff or contracted, and the project demands routing features that SMB-tier brands can't deliver (multi-WAN BGP, MPLS-style L3 segregation, complex QoS, hot-failover between two ISPs). The RB5009 single-handedly handles most branch and SMB edge scenarios for a fraction of a Cisco ASR's BoQ line item. The trade-off is configuration complexity — RouterOS is not for the faint of heart, which is why Y5 either pre-configures the device or charges for an engagement to ship it correctly the first time.

What sets them apart

Key differentiators._

  • RouterOS feature set: BGP, OSPF, MPLS, VRF, complex QoS — all on a ₹15-30K device
  • RouterBOARD hardware engineered for 24/7 outdoor deployment (CCR routers IP67-rated)
  • RouterOS scripting + API enables automation that's painful on Cisco / Aruba
  • Per-device pricing crushes the competition — no licensing, no subscriptions
  • WinBox / WebFig / SSH multi-interface management — power users get full control

Engineering notes

How we spec it._

RB5009UG+S+IN is the workhorse: 7×1G + 1×2.5G + 10G SFP+, runs OSPF/BGP at line rate. For larger sites step up to CCR2004 (16×1G + 2×SFP+) or CCR2216 (16×SFP28 + 4×QSFP28). CRS series is the switching counterpart — full L2/L3 with RouterOS. Avoid CHR (Cloud Hosted Router) virtual licensing unless you're running it inside a controlled VPS — perpetual license tiers can surprise customers at renewal. Always document the config in a winbox-exported .rsc file alongside the project handover — RouterOS configs are notoriously hard to reverse-engineer six months later.

History

How they got here._

MikroTik was founded in 1996 in Riga, Latvia by a small group of engineers who wanted x86 PC hardware to do what Cisco hardware did at one-tenth the price. The company built RouterOS — initially as a Linux-based router OS for commodity hardware — and over the next 25 years grew it into one of the most feature-dense networking platforms on the market. India presence has been driven entirely through channel distribution; MikroTik never opened an Indian subsidiary, which means support is community + documentation + certified MTCNA / MTCRE / MTCWE engineers rather than a TAC hotline. The brand owns most of the WISP (wireless ISP) market in India by unit count and a large share of the SMB router market where customers prioritise routing flexibility over plug-and-play.
