Engineering notes

How we spec it._

U7 Pro is the Wi-Fi 7 default; the U6+ covers Wi-Fi 6 SMB density at lower cost. Dream Machine Pro SE bundles gateway + controller + NVR in one rack unit — appropriate for offices up to ~150 users; spec separate Cloud Key + Switch Pro for larger sites where each component should scale independently. UniFi Protect requires UniFi Network on the same site for VLAN segmentation. AirMax is a different generation (older) than UniFi; use AirMax LiteBeam for outdoor PtP, not UniFi APs. Hardware availability in India varies — confirm stock with Y5 before quoting tight-deadline projects.

History

How they got here._

Ubiquiti was founded in 2003 by Robert Pera (ex-Apple wireless engineer) initially as a long-range outdoor-wireless vendor for emerging-market ISPs. The UniFi line launched in 2010, repositioning the company around enterprise-quality hardware with no licensing fees — a deliberate counter-positioning against Cisco and Aruba. The product family expanded into switching, surveillance (UniFi Protect), access control, VoIP, and the Dream Machine integrated security appliance. India presence operates through authorised distribution rather than direct subsidiary; Y5 became a Distribution Partner in 2022. The brand has strong appeal among design-led customers — boutique hotels, modern offices, coworking — who care visibly about hardware aesthetics.
