Overview

What this brand is._

Omada is TP-Link's software-defined networking platform — APs, switches, gateways, and routers managed from a single Omada Cloud dashboard or an on-prem OC controller. The line targets SMB and mid-market deployments that need centralised management but balk at Cisco / Aruba pricing. For Y5, Omada is the daily-driver line on most hospitality, education, and retail projects: deployment is fast, the captive portal is mature, and zero-touch provisioning means installers can drop and walk away.

The sweet spot of price, polish, and India support. Omada gets a real SDN experience to projects that can't justify Meraki licensing, and Y5 ships pre-configured devices on most engagements.

Y5 position

Why we stock them._

On most hospitality and education projects, Omada is the only stack that ticks every box: enterprise-class SDN at SMB pricing, no licensing line-item to negotiate annually, and a captive portal mature enough to integrate with hotel PMSes and education identity systems without custom development. The Y5 deployment pattern is to pre-configure controllers and APs in the warehouse, ship pre-paired devices, and have on-site installers run a zero-touch turn-up — most of the engineering effort lives in the design and pre-config phases, not the installation day.

What sets them apart

Key differentiators._

  • No subscription fees — controllers are free, hardware-only TCO
  • Hybrid deployment: cloud OR on-prem OR standalone, same firmware
  • Captive portal with SMS, social login, voucher, PMS integration built in
  • Zero-touch provisioning — devices auto-join the controller on first boot
  • Single dashboard spans Wi-Fi, switching, routing, VPN, and EAP firewall

Engineering notes

How we spec it._

Choose OC200 for sub-100-device deployments, OC300 for 100-500 devices, or cloud-hosted controller for multi-site fleets. Avoid mixing standalone-mode APs into a controller-managed site — firmware behaviour diverges. EAP670 and EAP650 share the same coverage cell size in practice; the 670's extra streams matter only above ~40 concurrent clients per AP. For wall-port deployments, EAP615-Wall pulls power and uplink from a single CAT6 run, which is the cleanest hotel-room solution.

History

How they got here._

Omada launched in 2018 as TP-Link's answer to Cisco Meraki — a true software-defined networking platform with cloud, hybrid-cloud, and on-prem controller options under one license-free model. The line grew from a handful of access points into a full SDN stack: APs, switches, gateways, and routers all managed from the same controller. By 2023 the platform had crossed several million managed devices globally. In India, Omada captured significant share in hospitality, education, and SMB-mid-market verticals, displacing both budget brands and Meraki-tier solutions thanks to the no-license model.
